Remote Learning

Hello Hillcrest Teachers,

As concern grows around COVID-19, many education leaders are making the difficult decision to close schools. To help make the transition to distance learning, I've compiled a master list of tools, services and applications to help support you and your classrooms as they make this transition. As always if you have any questions, feel free to email me or PM me on the Hillcrest Drive Elementary Slack.

Stay safe.

Flipgrid: This is a tool developed by Microsoft that empowers social learning through short videos. Think of it as email for video only. Teachers can create a class or a "grid" and create video prompts that allows students to respond using videos of their own. This is a great way to do icebreakers or ask students how they felt about a particular assignment or maybe a book that they read. You can access their Educator's Guide to Flipgrid here.

Amplify Reading: Amplify has made it even easier to login to Amplify Reading from home on almost any device. Instead of using confusing long single sign on emails or accessing badges from your teacher you can print out a login card with simple instructions to login. This means no Class Codes to remember or complicated passwords.

  1. Click here to login to the Amplify Dashboard.
  2. Login using your SSO
  3. Select your class using the dropdown menu
  4. Click on "Class Details"
  5. Click the button under the menu Usernames/Passwords that has a print icon that is titled "All"

This will generate cards for every student in your class.

Google Classroom: Google Classroom is a free web service, developed by Google for schools, that aims to simplify creating, distributing, and grading assignments in a paperless way. The primary purpose of Google Classroom is to streamline the process of sharing files between teachers and students. For upper grades this is a great way to ask for feedback, upload assignments, collect assignments, send quizzes etc.

In conjunction with Google Classroom, Google has launched Teach From Home a guide that aims to show teachers how they can use all of the tools provided by Google to keep classrooms learning.

You can learn things like:

Teachers across the US are using a combination of Google Classroom + Google Meet + Google Voice.

ABCmouse.com: During the COVID-19 pandemic ABCmouse.com is giving away access to all schools for free. Parents and students can access this by making an account and using the school code that is provided here. This letter outlines how parents and students can get access in both English and Spanish.
